It’s nice to meet you too.
For those of you that have been around since the dawn of time (aka- my websites beginnings) may have stumbled across my post about Endometriosis. And if you didn’t, Hello I’m Abbie and I have Endometriosis. I mean, at this stage it has practically become an unwanted personality trait.
With the absolute lack of funding and research for Endometriosis and Woman’s health in general- you involuntarily become a prescription guinea pig. Medications are thrown at you like candy at a depressing lolly scramble- given that your doctor actually believes the amount of pain you are in, and you are always left with the statement, ‘If this one doesn’t work we’ll give you something else.’ After what feels like having made my way down the entire list of medications deemed appropriate for Endometriosis, to no relief, the term ‘alternative pain relief’ was never mentioned.
Alice, the founder of Ovira suffered years of debilitating period pain with her Endometriosis: blackouts, vomiting, days in bed, and nothing helped. No painkiller, contraceptive pill, hot water bottle or hours of mindfulness could ease the pain.
Thats where the TENS machine comes in to play like a knight in shining armour. To borrow googles definition a TENS machine is a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator that sends electrical pulses through the skin to start your bod’s own pain killers. The electrical pulses can release endorphins and other substances to stop pain signals in the brain, therefore reducing or stopping pain. Sounds great right?

Having something so small and undetectable on my body lessening my pain is like having a cheeky wee secret to yourself. I use mine everyday, twice if the pain gets too much and I don’t want to take more pain relief, at this stage of the game it’s my hot new accessory I take everywhere with me. Phone, wallet, keys, Ovira.
If you experience period pains or have Endometriosis I would highly recommend getting an Ovira. Not only has it reduced my pain relief medication, it has also removed some of the guilt I have surrounding long term opioid use. To be completely honest, I think every person who menstruates should be given one of these as a welcome gift to the absolute shit show that a period can be.
